Since 1737 the lighthouse on Flat Holm Island has warned ships of the Island's presence and guided vessels in the British Channel. Automated in 1988, it was converted to solar powered operation in 1997, as part of a programme encompassing the solarisation of all Trinity House lighted buoys and a growing number of lighthouses and light-vessels.

The Flat Holm Project was established in 1982 to - manage Flat Holm, an SSSI, as a nature reserve; manage its listed buildings/ancient monuments; provide access for visitors and educational facilities.
